Homemade Laundry Detergent
I made homemade laundry detergent. This is huge for me. I don't do "homemade" anything, except food. I'm not crafty. I'm not resourceful. I just don't do it. Maybe I should try harder. Maybe this is the start of something new. It's a brand new day! Okay, let's not get carried away. It's just the one thing. But it is a cool thing!
The entire batch cost me under $25.00! It looks like it will last me AT LEAST three months. I'm hoping for six. I have no idea how long it will last. But normally, I buy detergent about every three weeks at almost $15.00 a bottle. So, in the end, this could save me a lot of money. And I'm all about saving money. I've done a few loads with it, and so far, it looks to be doing a better job than my regular detergent.
Here's what you need:
3.5 pounds of Oxyclean (3 small containers @ 3.86 ea)
3 bars of Fels-Naptha Soap (@.97 ea)
55 oz. of Arm and Hammer Super Wash Soda (@ 3.24)
4 lbs. of baking soda (@2.12)
4 lbs. of borax (@ 3.99)
I found all of these items at my local Wal-Mart in the detergent aisle. I guess you could use the off brand of oxyclean and baking soda. Easy-peasy.
All you have to do is grate the bars of soap. And stir everything together in a 5 gallon container. Again, easy-peasy. It took me like ten minutes to do it all. I use the scoop that came in the Oxyclean container. And I use 2 scoops per load.
I use mostly cold water for my laundry and had no problem with the soap dissolving. I don't have one of those fancy, high-efficiency, washer and dryers (although, that's my plan soon), but I did read it works fine in those. It was suggested that you put it directly in the drum, though, rather than the dispenser.
So, there you go!
